The idea for the immediate out of the box detailed character is to create unusual combinations, provide stats for things the players are unsure have any real use, and I'm planning to have at least 100-200 classes, some much rarer than others- More classic D&D ridiculously random results.
Players may demand pick and choose characters, however. But I'm against it thus far.
There are also built-in cliches to adhere to- like an overwhelming number of PCs have had some or all of there family members killed by the Dorthklord and there are a disproportionate number of orphans raised by others, etc.
Another aspect of the game's character randomness is there is a lot of character death planned, since the game and character setup is turn-key we could kill PCs more often. The harshness level goes well with the gore and treasure mentality, potentially.
